Gold Fang

With artists such as Popcaan, Burna Boy and Pa Salieu redefining the contemporary international hip-hop meta, Gold Fang is making similar sonic waves in Australia. Moving effortlessly between Reggae, Dancehall and Hip-Hop, Gold Fang is versatile yet unmistakable, able to seamlessly imbue any genre that he touches with a sonic fingerprint that is as distinctive as it is powerful. It is his undeniable presence and charisma – the intangible ‘aura’ that is common across all superstars – that has caused Gold Fang to be earmarked as one-to-watch, a ‘rising star ready to take the world by storm’ (triple j). At the very core of this personality is the unique journey that has led Gold Fang to where he is today. Born and raised in Trinidad & Tobago, Gold Fang moved to Australia at the age of 17, driven by the wishes of his grandmother, Nora, who hoped it would provide greater opportunities than those available at home. Upon arrival, he joined members of his extended family who had established rich musical roots in Australia. His father, Errol Renaud, had established Australia’s first authentic reggae band ‘Un Tabu’ in the 1970s, and had since flown the flag for Caribbean music in Sydney via organising and performing at the weekly Sydney institution, Reggae Mondays. It was there that Gold Fang’s confidence as a musician grew, with his energy and natural charisma as a live performer catching the attention of the mainstream music community, leading to a break-out feature on F-POS’ “Classic” in 2021, which landed on Spotify’s viral charts. Shortly after, Gold Fang released ‘Where Yuh From’ – a collaboration with fellow Sydney artist Big Skeez – under Melbourne-based powerhouse NLV Records, who he signed to later that year. This marked a period of prolific activity for Gold Fang as his accolades grew as a recording artist. In the 12 months after joining NLV, Gold Fang released seven solo records to considerable acclaim, with his catalogue of singles and features amassing over 5,000,000+ Spotify streams in that period. In doing so, Gold Fang captured the interest of the wider world; modelling for JD Sports and Adidas, hosting his own radio show on CADA, receiving international playlisting and radio rotation, as well as being commissioned by McDonalds US to write a custom song to soundtrack their biennial global conference in Florida. His reputation as a live performer likewise grew as his unrivalled ability to command an audience began to be recognised. Despite the majority of his career to date being dominated by COVID-19, Gold Fang amassed an impressive resumé of achievements as a performer in 2022: selling out his debut headline show in Sydney; travelling the country on nationwide tours with Australian bands Sticky Fingers and The Terrys; showcasing at Australian music conference Big Sound and being chosen for notable international support slots with UK Grime legend Novelist and Jamaican dancehall icon Sister Nancy. In 2023, this hard-earned momentum is rapidly increasing, as he was awarded his debut festival performance at Field Day (as chosen by triple j Unearthed), and was selected to support international superstar Lil Nas X in Sydney. Having just released ‘Mi Nuh Like’ with UK media behemoth GRM Daily, Gold Fang is now gearing up for the next phase of his career, as marked by the release of his debut mixtape, SMOOVE KILLA, in mid-March, as well as a run of notable supports (including Genesis Owusu) and soon-to-be-announced festival performances. So far in his short career, Gold Fang has announced himself as one of the most exciting prospects in the Australian music scene, and this shows no signs of changing. His versatility, personality and unmistakable vocals are undeniable as he fuses the sonic landscape and lived experience of his time in Trinidad with contemporary sounds reflective of his new life in Australia. A product of his roots, there is truly only one Gold Fang, and now he is ready to share it with the world.
