Sappho was born in early 2020, when Phoebe Baker (the iconic frontwoman of Melbourne band, ALPINE) threw herself into exploring her pop influences. After a few months of writing, Baker realised these songs were turning into more than just a fun creative o utlet, they had become something empowering, with a voice that showcased to the world her sound – the Sappho sound – a sound where lush pop meets something quirky, a little bit cheeky, a lot sexy and ultimately, something irresistibly fun. Bursting unapo logetically onto the scene in 2021 with her debut single ‘Flex’ , promptly followed by ‘Collide’ then ‘ Scared Angel’ , Baker provided us with an idiosyncratic and colourful introduction to the vivacious univer se of Sappho. It’s a universe that is rich with irresistible groove, unyielding drama, and infectious energy, fashioned by a woman who wants to make clear – there are no boundaries!
